Happy 33rd anniversary Mum and Dad! Imagine that… 33 years!
There is a story in the Hindu tradition that I think fits well in this context:
Ganesha, the Elephant god, and his brother Subramanya had a dispute about who was the elder of the two. They went to Shiva to seek a fresh opinion, and he suggested that the first of the two to go around the world and return to where they stood would be declared the older brother.
Without hesitating Subramanya got on his magical peacock and took off to fly the world circuit. Ganesha did not hesitate either, but instead of racing with his brother went to look for his parents, circled them and returned to Shiva.
When Subramanya finally returned and stood next to his brother, whom he presumed had not bothered to compete, Shiva asked of Ganesha: “Beloved and wise Ganesha! But how can I give you the Prize; you did not go around the world?”
“No, but I have gone around my parents. My parents represent the entire manifested universe.”
And that is how Ganesha became the elder of the two.
